Transportation Through the Ages: From Stirrups to Steam

Agriculture Through the Ages: From Silk to Supermarkets

Readers begin with a fast-paced orientation -- how 10,000 years of global conflict over land and resources continuously forced humanity to invent new technologies to both preserve and end life. It moves forward to explore these tactical milestones chronologically through the following eras and chapters:

*The Inception of Civilization Conflict: The book begins with the birth of early human settlements, tracing how primitive communities first began clashing over basic resources and hunting territories.

*Early Ranged Weaponry and Logistics: It highlights how ancient Americans and early tribes engineered the first advanced spear throwers to significantly increase power and distance in combat.

Machines Through the Ages: From Furnaces to Factories

How good were ancient engineers? Consider this: Ancient civilizations invented the six basic machines that power the 21st Century world. Despite the most powerful computers and artificial intelligence (AI) bots, nobody has ever added a seventh! These geniuses from the past reshaped the world around them on a massive scale long before invention of the wheel -- let alone steam engines, motor vehicles, earth mover, and lectricity. The Woods' reveal that early societies combined basic tools into advanced mechanical devices to enginered their environment on a massive scale. The core structural and mechanical breakthroughs explored in this book include:

*2. Organizing and Structuring InformationInventing Alphabets: Explore how early engineers designed and improved written alphabets and writing systems to keep permanent records of history, trade, and law.Creating Paper: Learn how ancient societies engineered writing materials by processing raw plants or animal skins to make data light, flexible, and portable.

*3. Mass Media and Distribution Systems and Postal Networks: Examine how the first postal and courier systems were organized by ancient empires to move physically recorded messages across vast distances. Block Printing and Presses: Deep dive into the mechanics of early block printing and the printing press, which allowed people to copy long texts significantly faster than writing by hand.

Working Chemists With Disabilities: Expanding Opportunities in Science

Published by the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world's largest scientific society, this landmark work shares personal strategies and professional advice from scientists with physical disabilities. One clear message: Careers in scientific research are not only possible for individuals with disabilities, but can be a perfect match. The book explains how these professionals maintain productive careers in research and teaching through practical workplace and laboratory accommodations. Among the topics:

*Personal Narratives: Showcases biographical accounts of successful chemists overcoming visible and invisible limitations.

*Laboratory Layout Modification: Outlines practical design adjustments like variable-height benches, specialized fume hoods, and custom instrument layouts.

*Sensory Adaptation Strategies: Provides exact techniques for accommodating blind, low-vision, deaf, and hard-of-hearing scientists.

*Assistive Technology Integration: Evaluates tactile models, data-to-audio conversion tools, and early braille implementations.

*Navigating Legal Systems: Guides employees and managers through the technicalities of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).Workplace Culture Shifts: Targets systemic discrimination by changing how academic and industrial research labs handle accommodation requests.

Science on Ice: Research in the Antarctic

The Frozen Continent badly needs a new image, and this book provides the script. It demystifes the Antarctic not as a barren wasteland, but as one of Earth's most critical, high-tech natural laboratories. Mike Woods uses his rare perspective to explain how polar research focuses on global climate change and other urgent questions about our planet's survival. Rare perspective? Few writers have made more expeditions to a wider range of antarctic environments. Woods gained insights into life in the Deep Freeze and research in astronomy, climate change, marine biology and other topics by joining scientific expeditions. Three years of them, in places where minus 42 degrees F. is just an ordinary day Venues include the geographic South Pole; Palmer Station on the Antarctic Peninsula; McMurdo, the main U. S. Base; the Nathaniel B. Palmer as the ice breaker navigated the Weddel Sea, and the Polar Duke's voyages around the peninsula. Core Themes & Content:

*The Torgersen Island Ecosystem: Explores how scientists track Adélie penguin populations to measure the cascade effects of warming oceans and shifting food webs.

*Atmospheric Crime Scenes: Documents the historical discovery of the ozone hole and the ongoing, high-stakes monitoring of atmospheric depletion.

*Deep-Sea Dynamics: Traces how oceanographers brave the violent Weddell Sea to study massive cold-water currents that drive global ocean circulation.

*South Pole Astronomy: Highlights how sub-zero, pristine polar air allows astrophysicists to use cutting-edge telescopes to hunt for neutrinos and cosmic rays.

*Interplanetary Training Grounds: Details how NASA utilizes the brutal, dry Antarctic terrain as a physical simulation site to test rovers and equipment for future Mars missions.

Roadmaps and Rampways: Profiles of Students With Disabilities in Science, Mathematics,Engineering, and Technology

Listen to 34 young people who tell their stories. They are either blind or deaf, or they may get around in wheelchairs or have learning disabilities. But their disabilities do not define them, and have not stopped them from taking jobs as biologists, computer scientists, mechanical engineers, and aerospace scientists. Roadmaps and Rampways, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), chronicles 25 years of a remarkable era, with dramatic changes in the law, in attitudes, and in "assistive" technology that are transforming the lives of people with disabilities in the United States. The young people featured in the book all participated in a AAAS internship program known as ENTRY POINT!, which has served as a bridge into jobs in engineering and sciences in both the public and private sectors since 1996. Of the 350 students placed in ENTRY POINT! internships, 92 percent are either employed fulltime, or have gone on to graduate school in a technical field. Their stories are in marked contrast to the general population of people with disabilities, among whom only 25 percent have fulltime jobs. Core Themes & Content:

*Authentic Student Profiles: Features firsthand biographical accounts of students with physical, sensory, learning, and psychological disabilities successfully navigating STEM degrees.

*The "Rampway" Concept: Defines actionable institutional pathways and support systems that bridge the gap between high school, higher education, and technical careers.

*Systemic Barrier Analysis: Identifies and critiques the hidden structural, physical, and cultural obstacles within university laboratories and classrooms that restrict access.

*Self-Advocacy & Identity: Explores how underrepresented students develop self-efficacy, form mentor relationships, and learn to communicate their specific access needs in competitive academic environments.

*Strategic Accommodations: Highlights real-world examples of creative modifications, adaptive software, and assistive technologies engineered by or for students to excel in field and lab work.

*Institutional Blueprints: Provides university administrators, professors, and policymakers with concrete strategies to cultivate disability-friendly STEM pipelines and retention programs.
